Beyond Helvetica: The Evolution of Swiss Design in Europe by Artem Velychko

Another important figure in the development of Swiss design was Armin Hofmann, who was a professor at the Basel School of Design. Hofmann emphasized the importance of typography, and believed that typography should be the foundation of all design. He also stressed the importance of experimentation, and encouraged his students to explore new techniques and ideas.

Finding joy through such compositional possibilities, the duo emphasizes the importance of fostering ethical collaborations to ensure growth for all while exchanging a wealth of knowledge and expertise. With a new theme each year, House of Switzerland Milano is the physical culmination of the project, taking residence in Milan’s iconic Casa degli Artisti in Brera. Split across three floors, with indoor and outdoor installations, the House draws from the country’s design heritage while addressing themes through a current lens and a future-focused vision during this year’s design week. Reading the above it should be easy to see the influence on the current design trends. The removal of ornamentation and a return to fundamental design principles is a guiding force behind the move from skeuomorphism to flat design.

"As a cultural centre for musical arts, Harmony is a platform for local emerging talents, musical enthusiasts, tourists and daily passersby. Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. Native California wildflowers accent the Arroyo Vista Garden, which was designed with fire safety in mind. Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents.

The majority of pieces from this movement are in the form of posters, stamps, institutional typographical identity, street signs, etc. In this sense, these artists are leveraging much more than just top-down communication, they’re creating user-friendly interfaces. He took a position at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich in 1918, and from there he instructed the leading lights of the next generation, among them Müller-Brockmann and Hofmann.

In the early 1970’s he designed the Paris Metro signature with a variation of Univers, he was then asked to design the ‘way-finding signature’ for Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport. Theo Ballmer is best known for his posters, but he also worked as a photographer, lettering designer, teacher and typographer. He demonstrated talent from a very early age when he studied at the Zürich Kunstgewerbeschule, where he had Ernst Keller as one of his professors. Like many other Swiss Graphic designers Ballmer went to the Bauhaus, but only after he was already an established designer. It feels quite inviting when a web page is laid out in such a fashion that the organization of the page (and the site) is clearly conveyed in a split of a second. It’s also good for business, since people use interfaces that they understand and tend reject the ones they don’t.

In a world where climate patterns are becoming more extreme because of human impact, projects like this seek to find a balance between the environment and human comfort. Students showcase their innovative research and development by addressing issues surrounding public spaces and simultaneously demonstrating the joy found in responsible design. Although initially this office won commissions for houses, it folded in the Depression era. After eight months away, on what Charles called his "On The Road tour" in Mexico, he eventually set up another practice in 1935. At the time, Charles was asked to design a house for the Meyers, friends of theirs.

Josef Müller-Brockmann

From publishing to tech, any industry aiming for that uncluttered, purpose-driven aesthetic hits the jackpot with Swiss design. It’s a win for making complex information feel like a breeze, so think finance, healthcare, and—you guessed it—high-precision Swiss watches. Bauhaus dances more with experimental angles and shapes but, hey, they both aim for practicality and timelessness. Swiss Design principles, they’re like the north star for contemporary minimalism. Swiss Design principles leap from paper to pixels, shaping web design, interface aesthetics—every pixel with a purpose.

Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. The Institute of Contemporary Design Practices (ICDP), as part of the Basel Academy of Art and Design, is exploring the notion that joy is essential to design practice and a vital ingredient to creativity. With students approaching each project positively, they continue to implement joy while critically analyzing their working methods and the paradigm of design with its linear problem-solving approach.

Founded on a passionate commitment to sustainability, Berninox is seeking to disrupt the oral hygiene sector with its future-focused design sensibilities and attention to detail. Without any compromise on quality, the Berninox toothbrush is made from a stainless-steel handle and an ocean plastic replaceable head with recycled bristles. All components are manufactured in Switzerland, and an integrated clip mechanism allows for simple head replacement. With its conscious creativity at the heart of its operation, the studio is helping us make better choices through a responsible design approach. Addressing this year’s project with an intrinsic curiosity, creatives are invited to explore their emotional connection to the design process. Eventually, each project at House of Switzerland Milano offers a unique interpretation of the joy found in ingenuity and innovation.

The use of clean typography, grid systems, and simplicity can greatly enhance the effectiveness of a design, making it a key element in modern design practice. A grid system is a rigid framework that is supposed to help graphic designers in the meaningful, logical and consistent organization of information on a page. Rudimentary versions of grid systems existed since the medieval times, but a group of graphic designers, mostly inspired in ideas from typographical literature started building a more rigid and coherent system for page layout. The core of these ideas were first presented in the book Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann which helped to spread the knowledge about the grids thorough the world. Even a quick study of classic Swiss style works reveals a strong attention of graphic designers to uniform design elements and strong geometric shapes. Graphic artists have experimented with abstract geometric patterns, uncomon color combinations, text manipulations and striking abstract visuals that were used to clearly convey their purpose in a very remarkable way.

Hoping to resonate with those who enjoy outdoor activities, the project embraces traditional craft and the beauty found in handmade creations. With its implementation of up-cycling, the project also exudes a sense of hope through its environmental responsibility while allowing the user to experience joy as much as the creator did in making them. The School of Technology and Design (HFTG) is working with its students to find innovative ways to cool public spaces. Under the project title Taking Joy in Responsible Design, they are configuring an urban cooling system that can capture wind, provide shade, or disperse water. Using new technology, the project aims to create a space where visitors can feel comfortable under intense sunlight to continue enjoying the city.

According to the Swiss movement, adding more elements without fully exploring the potential of the fundamental ones can be considered a ‘waste’. As these basic elements, like typography, have so much aesthetic potential, there’s rarely a need for other visual graphics elements. Also known as International Style, the Swiss Style does not simply describe a style of graphic design made in Switzerland. It became famous through the art of very talented Swiss graphic designers, but it emerged in Russia, Germany and Netherlands in the 1920’s. This style in art, architecture and culture became an ‘international’ style after 1950’s and it was produced by artists all around the globe. Despite that, people still refer to it as the Swiss Style or the Swiss Legacy.

Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Easy access to water hose and electric hookup. The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff). However not a marina - mainly dockage for restaurant & bar (which we found convenient). Therefore, no dock restrooms or showers (bathrooms at restaurant).

Live music,

Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good. As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around.

Fast service,

Filled with a wide variety of seafood specialties and casual bites, there is a taste here that will please any pallet. The restaurant does have special menus for holidays, as well as an amazing event space, perfect for hosting your next big shindig. The beautiful veranda that overlooks the creek gives guests a quiet spot to catch up on some serious R&R.

Dinner,

My only complaint has nothing to do with the marina. The restaurant has gone downhill. My guess is they have a new chef. It was prime rib ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Then got chicken parmigiana.

Comfort food,

Great food at the restaurant. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Lively place with live music over the weekend. Nice location and great staff. The restaurant was good and reasonably priced.

Again, great docking support. The restaurant had a live band and the food was excellent. Very pleasant stay and great stop between Cape May and Annapolis. Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant.

Happy hour food,

No showers, laundry or grocery nearby. Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Much enjoyed the large bar/restaurant - good food and service. This is a restaurant with a dock that accepts transients, not a true marina. Note that they have fuel (gas and diesel), but no other amenities for transients (no pump-out/showers/laundry/after-hours toilets etc.). Those would be welcome additions that could lead to longer stays.

Very helpful & professional, well versed in the challenges of their current. Excellent hours for transients if trying to stretch your day. Nice casual restaurant on site.

Very friendly and competent Dock Master, Steve, guided us right into fuel dock and then around to out spot on the bulkhead. Despite passing ships, there was very little rocking from wakes. Restaurant was good and steps from the boat. This is a really nice joint. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.

We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. Definitely would come back. We had a really good experience here. The staff was super friendly and helpful and really went out of their way for us. The restaurant was great and you are a short dinghy ride to town on the other side of the canal.

Great help from Dockmaster and dockhand. The Army Corp had actually closed the C&D Canal due to fog. I contacted the Dockmaster and he called me when the Canal was open to traffic.

The onsite restaurant was very good. Live music was enjoyable without being too loud. Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. We are docked from May1st to Oct31st on the transit floating docks. Our vessel is definately in good hands with Dockmaster Tom & Manager Steven Connell.

Staff was excellent from the time I hit the Fuel dock, until I was down the pier at my slip. Dockhands were knowledgeable and knew how to secure boat to fixed pier. Fun being on the edge of the restaurant and people eating who wanted to be more informed about boats. Great experience on the C and D canal. The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained.

The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house. Boaters are able to dock at either the fixed dock when booking with shore power, or the floating docks if power is not needed. The marina offers 30amp and 50amp shore power.

When choosing the type of cleats to customize, consider your position, playing style, and personal preferences. Ultimately, the right pair of cleats for customization will depend on what you value most in terms of functionality and design. The one important note here is that you need to own the rights to the image, something that is moderated before the boot is created. If the image is denied, the consumer’s order is cancelled and their purchase is refunded. Spray painting cleats is possible, but it can be challenging due to the smooth and hard surface.

Menu for Schaefer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

Dealing with the currents in the canal and the huge concrete Chesapeake City Bridge support in the middle of the dock can be quite a challenge. And many a loud speed boat takes advantage of the good fuel prices here. But the people are friendly and the area peaceful, with the restaurant offering decent food and beverage options. Overall a nice one night stop.

Best of the Bay 2018: Food & Drink.

A 2-3 knot current with an easy approach. Dock hands are very helpful. We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you. I had a cold beer and thought of the sounds as a funky reggae beat.

Happy hour drinks,

The docks and power were very new and more than adequate. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant. Dock hands were great and very helpful.

Wheelchair accessible entrance,

While visiting, boaters will have access to great amenities including restrooms and a full provisioned Ships Store. If a floating dock is preferred, the marina will accommodate. The available amenities of the docks, which are located outside of a restaurant and bar, are noted on the Snag-A-Slip profile.

Comfort food,

Very helpful tie up assistance. Tom was expert on getting us secured in swift currents. On site restaurant very convenient. Convenient spot to stop with a restaurant at your door.

Late-night food,

Lots of knocking throughout the night. If you’re looking for a fun spot to grab a bite and drink this is the place. If looking for a quiet night of sleep it’s not the best.

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city maryland

The marina does offer restrooms, but a bath house is not an available amenity. This is a good location to stop in preparation to head down the C&D canal, and Delaware River. I believe this is the only marina in Chesapeake City that has fuel.

Payment Options

No stores of any kind nearby, although Steve offered to have staff give us a ride to a grocery store. The dock hands were excellent. Got tied up quickly and efficiently in the current.

Schaffer's is a desirable destination, not just a great marina and restaurant. Beautiful view of a competitor across the Canal, too. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic. Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise.

Also a great walking and bike path if you're looking for a place to stretch your legs. A very convenient stop along the way. The person that helped us dock was excellent! Tied up quickly and securely.

The boat traffic both large and small, rocked us all night long. There is no bath house, so that is certainly a “con”. The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements. Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night.

Always awkward if seen as a complainer. The owner and his son were polite and the facility was a perfect stopover. Very good prices at the dock and restaurant. On our way from Cape May to Baltimore.

Dockmaster and crew were excellent in meeting all our needs. Location much quieter than Chesapeake Inn. Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock hands were very helpful ,especially with their current and friendly. Steve, the Dockmaster, went out of his way to make sure we had a great stay. We will definitely stop here again.
